Vishal and I had mutual friends growing up. His best friends who were older than me, I had gone to high school with. I never really hung out with his crew, but I knew of him as the guy who drove the big yellow Hummer. A couple of years later, I was at his best friend’s apartment with one of my girlfriends, and he showed up. He was telling me how he was getting ready to move to India for a few months for business and said we should hang out some time (which never happened). After that, I hadn’t seen him until my 22nd birthday (about a year or two after that). After that night, we continued to run into each other randomly. Him and one of my good friends were also friends. He would always ask her about me and tell her to invite me out with her so that he could come meet us. Vishal eventually asked if I wanted to go for dinner. From that point on, we were hanging out and talking almost every day. As things started to progress, he told me that he had to go back to India for work for a few months. The night before he left, he cooked me the best chicken parm dinner, and told me that he wanted me to wait for him while he was away. 3 months turned into 6, and I still waited. When Vishal finally came back, we went to a concert at Roseland Ballroom. I was on line for the bathroom, when he decided to run inside, in front of all of these girls, to ask me if I wanted to “make it official” …. And the rest is history!
I knew that a proposal was coming soon, I just didn’t know how soon. We have a trip planned to go to Greece in June, and I was for sure assuming it would happen then. We had dinner reservations the night he proposed. We usually like to get dressed up when we go out for dinner, so that wasn’t odd to me at all. When Vishal got back from walking the dog, he told me that we weren’t going out for dinner anymore, and that instead he had dinner set up on the rooftop of our apartment building. At this point, I kind of had a feeling that something was going to happen, but figured it was a random week day and it wouldn’t happen that night. He went upstairs to “make sure the food was ready”, and told me he would let me know when to come up. When he called me to come up to the roof, I felt a bit nervous. As I opened the door to the roof, I was welcomed by a walkway of candles leading up to him. I started to cry as I walking towards him, and saw this lit up sign that said the words “Marry Me?”. As I got closer to Vishal, he took my hands and told me how much he loves me and wants to spend the rest of his life with me. He then got down on one knee and popped the question. It couldn’t have been more perfect.
