Thomas knew that “Night of 1,000 Jack O’Lanterns” on governor’s island would be a perfect way to propose to his long term girlfriend Erika. He asked us if we can document the event, as he wanted paparazzi-style photography and we said yes right away.
The only problem we had was that its more than a thousand pumpkins on the island and we had no idea where to find ours. A couple of hours before the proposal, Thomas send us an approximate location of the engagement spot and we started the mission.
First, we needed to find Thomas and his girlfriend on a ferry, which was taking a visitor from Manhattan to Governor’s Island.
Then, we were trying to be discreet and make some hidden pictures of the couple.
After the ferry arrival to the island, another problem came in, it was absolutely dark. We were afraid not to be able to find our couple there, so we really had to follow them everywhere.
After 25 minutes of pumpkins admiration (YES, they are amazing! The organizers did an awesome job with it) we finally spotted the one that says “Erika, will you marry me?”. People were passing by, taking pictures and no one expects that that pumpkin was designated to an actual proposal.
Erika came over and took a picture, she laughed and comment on the writing, but did not finish the sentence as Thomas got one knee and asked the question.
She was in shock and keep asking how did he do that. People around were clapping and congratulating the couple.
We finally were able to do open shots and Erika was amazed by the fact that the photographer was following them from the ferry.
That was an unbelievable night and one of the most thrilling experiences ever.
Thomas and Erika, congratulations on your proposal and thank you for letting us to be a part of your special moment.
