How to help your son with the marriage proposal?

Allow professionals to take care
of your proposal in New York

A marriage proposal can be very stressful and very often we have mothers helping their children organize the big surprise. This job can be very emotional and the first thing you need to do is to check with yourself if that is something you will be able to handle. Not only you will be helping your child to step forward a mature life but also keeping in secret the event and planning everything. So if the answer is ‘yes’ here are some tips on how to help your son with his marriage proposal so he doesn’t stress and you get to shine!

How to help your son with the marriage proposal?

  1.  Make sure your son and his future fiancé are on the same page: Sometimes, as humans, we make decisions based on emotions, so make sure your son and his future fiancé have talked about marriage before, so that the answer will, of course, be “YES!”
  2. Make sure the future fiancé will love the ring. With you being the future mother-in-law, you can try to get some insight into the style of your son’s partner without looking so suspicious. This ring is forever, so you want to make sure it is perfect and it will be loved!
  3. Discuss the budget for the proposal and ask him what is his vision. As a mother, of course, you can suggest a thing or two, but remember that it is his big moment and he needs to make a decision.
  4. Discuss plans for after the proposal. Sometimes people get caught up in planning the moment when you propose and forget to plan anything after, this could be an awful mistake. Make sure your son has plans for after, you could choose between a romantic dinner for two or a small celebration with friends and family. Make sure to book in advance because nice restaurants fill up pretty quickly.
  5. Have a photographer: A photographer will capture the special moments for your son to keep forever so you want to make sure your son has hired one in advance. We can provide a secret New York photographer for you to capture the big moment.
  6. Cover story: Make sure your son does not blow the surprise and has a good story of where they are going or what they are doing that day so you don’t mess up the secret proposal. Sometimes secrets are hard to keep so have your son come up with a good cover story for the proposal day.
  7. Suggest that your son chats with his future partner’s parents: If your son’s partner has their parents or a parent in their life, it’s always a good and classy idea to ask the parents for their child’s hand in marriage. This is an old tradition but we think it should still be cherished nowadays.
  8. Make sure you have an alternative plan: For a marriage proposal, you must always have plan B, because sometimes life happens! If you plan an outside proposal and rain or snow storm comes, you want to make sure you can still propose and use your plan B. Discuss options and be prepared to move things around if needed.
  9. Tell your son to plan something that his partner will really enjoy. The secret tip to planning an amazing proposal is to plan something that will have your partner in tears. Your son should know his partner best and should choose if they would like a public engagement or a private one and also if they want something big and cheesy or something small, intimate, and low-key. We have a number of great options, from rooftops to picnics in the park and you can absolutely find a perfect option for a surprise proposal.
  10. Be supportive. A mother knows her children best and there is nothing better than getting advice and reassurance from a parent. Encourage your son not to stress, but to be excited about the future and not to worry about messing up the proposal because it will be perfect no matter what!

Planning an event is a very stressful job and its times consuming as well, so if you know it is not something you would love to spend your energy on don’t be afraid to say ‘ no’. You can discuss the plan and come up with the perfect proposal idea together and then pass this information to the planner, who will execute the plan.  In this case, you still helped a  lot and also will have the opportunity to actually enjoy the engagement.

Will it be snowing on my proposal in December?

Allow professionals to take care
of your proposal in New York

One of the most asked questions we got for the December bookings is if its going to snow on that day? And as much as we are all excited about a ‘white Christmas’, it hasn’t  snowed in December in New York City since 2003!

So when is it going to snow in New York and how to make your December proposal more festive?

December in New York is a very tricky month, on the one hand its still warm and sunny, on the other hand its windy and rainy. When planning your Holiday proposal in New York, always have a plan ‘B’ for the rainy day.  And think of dressing in layers as the weather will be changing every day.

What should you know when planning your Holiday proposal in New York?

First of all start planning your proposal earlier as its the busiest month of the year. Hotels, restaurant reservations, attraction tickets are flying fast. This is also the engagement month, so venues and vendors are booked as well.  There are only 3 Saturdays till Christmas Day and most of the clients are looking to propose before that. If you planning proposing in Central Park or Brooklyn Bridge Park, you also need to apply for the permits in order to secure the desired location.

Then, think about your ‘cover story’. It is an engagement month so most of the partners are expecting to get engaged during this time. If you trying to keep it a secret and truly surprise your partner, think of the natural way to bring them over to the proposal location.

Be realistic. We all saw these beautiful instagram pictures of the empty plaza next to the Rockefeller  Center Christmas Tree and thought that that would be a perfect private spot for a proposal. But in reality it is the most crowded place in the city. Choose the alternative tree or come to the plaza in the morning to avoid the crowds.

Be aware of the traffic. December is the month when people from all over the country  and the world are coming over to see the Christmas Tree and experience the Christmas magic in New York , the traffic is unbelievable  and it might takes hours to go through boroughs.

Dress in layers. It might snow, rain and shine in the same day. December is also known for strong winds, so dress up warm.

So when snow falls in New York?

January, February and March are typical snowy months in New York. There might be a mix of rain and snow in December but to get that all-white picture of iconic Central Park you would need to propose in later months.

If you want to incorporate winter feeling into your proposal, here are some tips. First, make it festive. If you propose in December, the city is decorated with Christmas ornaments and lights, its very celebratory, so do the same for your proposal. Either propose by the Christmas Tree with a secret photographer capturing a surprise ( the Lotte Palace tree or Washington Square park trees are absolutely stunning) or decorate a private space with the Christmas theme.

Another great option to get that winter feeling is to reserve a table in the restaurant with the fireplace. That is a perfect way to celebrate your  newly engagement and share great news with all your friends and family. If you propose in Central Park, the Tavern on the Green and Loeb Boathouse would be ideal spots.

Another way to add Christmas spirit to your proposal would be by renting a vintage car, which can pick you from or to the proposal. There is nothing like driving around a city enjoying all the Christmas decor.

What to make it festive but not into Christmas?

December is a perfect month for elegant  and elaborate proposals. If you want to propose, but not looking to do it under the Christmas Tree here are some tips:

1. Rent a private venue, preferably a rooftop with the city view.

With all the noise and crowds in the city you really need to find a private venue where  it will be just the two of you. A Private rooftop with indoor space would be perfect for an elegant proposal.

2. Choose an elegant decor

Instead of Christmas lights and bright decor, choose more neutral colors. Add candles and flowers, a live musician and photographer. Let it be a moment for just you two.

3. Invite family

To celebrate a newly engagement would be a perfect opportunity to get everyone together. Invite close friends and family and create memories together.
