How to propose this Valentine's Day. The ultimate marriage proposal guide

Valentine’s Day is famous for its romance and celebrations and that is why it always became the subject of discussions of whether or not it’s a good day to pop the question. Proposing on Valentine’s Day can be tricky. On one hand, it is the most romantic day of the year and it is dedicated to love and romance, so why not use this opportunity and surprise your partner with the marriage proposal of her dreams. On the other hand, it can be a disaster if not done properly and your partner might feel that you did not put enough effort into the proposal. It is like proposing on Christmas Day, with the engagement ring as the present. Many girls feel that when men propose on the Holidays they don’t put much thought into the planning, so if you decide to pop the question on this day, you need to make sure that it is very personal and thoughtful. So how to plan the ultimate marriage proposal on Valentine’s Day?

How to propose this Valentine's Day. The ultimate marriage proposal guide

1. Surprise her

This is the day when she really expects a proposal, so you need to think of your ” cover story” extra hard. Element of surprise is very important, so try to catch her off guard. For example, take her out for dinner ( outside dining is thriving in New York right now, but you need to make a reservation in advance) and naturally she will expect a dinner proposal, but no, have a good time and get back home. That’s where you will surprise her. Transform your apartment into something special. Luxury flowers, ” will you marry me?” sign, candles, and balloons. Your partner would never expect it and would be blown away. As a bonus, have her friends and family appear from another room and celebrate the engagement altogether.

Key elements: Don’t propose in the obvious place and time. Think outside the box and invest in the decorations.

How we can help: Our room makeover package is ideal for a surprise proposal. If you want to make it extra special consider renting a gigantic ‘ Marry Me’ led sign.

2. Make it grand

This might sound odd, but Valentine’s Day proposals are perfect for extravagant gestures. This is a perfect day to propose with that huge  5 feet flower heart sculpture on a private rooftop or rent a penthouse floor and cover it in flowers and balloons. Since this day is all about love, your partner might suspect that you are planning something, but she doesn’t know how you would do it. That is why this day is perfect for something grand and extraordinary. Don’t overdo it and plan thousands of things for one day, instead make one big gesture. For example, rent a luxury penthouse and decorate it with thousand red roses, add private dining and live musicians to perform the whole evening just for you two. Create a slideshow and play it on a projector and add a personalized Marry Me sign. This evening will stay with both of you forever.

Also, always think of your partner first. If she is not that type of person, keep it simple.

Key elements: Don’t plan too many things for one day, instead concentrate on one big gesture. Consider your partner’s personality first.

How we can help: We are offering three different luxury penthouses in New York with stunning views of the Manhattan skyline, choose the one you like the most and we will take care of the rest.

3. Flowers

This day is all about flowers, but it doesn’t need to be roses. Valentine’s day is always associated with red roses and if your partner loves it, even better, but don’t stuck on red roses only.

If your partner loves peonies, those are the flowers you need to use for your marriage proposal. Be prepared, that any flower arrangement would cost more on this day, so add this to your budget. Valentine’s day is the perfect day for flowers. You can get the ‘ Will you marry me” sign made of flowers or the flower wall with your names written on it. This is the day when flower decoration would look appropriate and natural. Also, what a great way to show your partner that you know her taste and you put some thought into the proposal.

Key elements: Know what your partner loves

How can we help: Imagine walking through the park and stumble upon the cupid, who presents your lady a bouquet of her favorite flowers with the engagement note. Yes, we can do it. Check our ” custom proposal planning” section for that.

4. Embrace the cliches

As romantic as this day can be it also gives you a lot of opportunities to be humorous and embrace the cliches to your advantage. Recreate the movie scene that she loves or rent a cupid costume and surprise her like that. There are so many ways to make this day fun and memorable, so if you are one of those couples that love a good laugh, think outside the box and make this day stand out. The most important thing when you start planning your marriage proposal is to think about your partner first and take into consideration all things that she likes, so if ” Valentine’s Day” is her favorite movie, surprise her with the huge Teddy Bear or hire the flash mob dancer dressed in heart costumes.

Key elements: Take your partner’s personality into consideration first, if you know she would love her proposal to be fun and outgoing, go for it.

How can we help: Our professional dancers would nail that cupid dance.

5. Surprise her with a new skill

This is a perfect marriage proposal idea to surprise your partner with a new skill on Valentine’s Day. Maybe you took the guitar classes and learned how to play her favorite song, or you create the scrapbook of your relationship, or you learned how to bake the heart cookies. Whatever it is, your partner would be blown away by your effort and commitment.  Once we had a client who made his own engagement ring and proposed it to his girlfriend, she was so impressed by his effort and kept asking how he does that.

Key elements: Sometimes little things count the most, so don’t get discouraged if you didn’t learn how to play her favorite song on the piano by heart. She would appreciate your effort even for trying to do it.

How can we help: Our professional musician can help you out with learning the instrument and performing the song to your partner.

How to propose this Valentine's Day. The ultimate marriage proposal guide

Getting engaged on Valentine’s Day can be hard, but if it’s done right it would be the most unforgettable marriage proposal experience. Also if you are still nervous that your partner might consider the day to be to cliche, propose around the date. February 12 or 13th, would be perfect for a surprise engagement, plus she won’t expect it since it is not valentine’s day.

And don’t forget about the photographer. It is a perfect opportunity to document the event and have those Instagram worthy pictures of your special day. Will it be snowing on my proposal in December?

Allow professionals to take care
of your proposal in New York

One of the most asked questions we got for the December bookings is if its going to snow on that day? And as much as we are all excited about a ‘white Christmas’, it hasn’t  snowed in December in New York City since 2003!

So when is it going to snow in New York and how to make your December proposal more festive?

December in New York is a very tricky month, on the one hand its still warm and sunny, on the other hand its windy and rainy. When planning your Holiday proposal in New York, always have a plan ‘B’ for the rainy day.  And think of dressing in layers as the weather will be changing every day.

What should you know when planning your Holiday proposal in New York?

First of all start planning your proposal earlier as its the busiest month of the year. Hotels, restaurant reservations, attraction tickets are flying fast. This is also the engagement month, so venues and vendors are booked as well.  There are only 3 Saturdays till Christmas Day and most of the clients are looking to propose before that. If you planning proposing in Central Park or Brooklyn Bridge Park, you also need to apply for the permits in order to secure the desired location.

Then, think about your ‘cover story’. It is an engagement month so most of the partners are expecting to get engaged during this time. If you trying to keep it a secret and truly surprise your partner, think of the natural way to bring them over to the proposal location.

Be realistic. We all saw these beautiful instagram pictures of the empty plaza next to the Rockefeller  Center Christmas Tree and thought that that would be a perfect private spot for a proposal. But in reality it is the most crowded place in the city. Choose the alternative tree or come to the plaza in the morning to avoid the crowds.

Be aware of the traffic. December is the month when people from all over the country  and the world are coming over to see the Christmas Tree and experience the Christmas magic in New York , the traffic is unbelievable  and it might takes hours to go through boroughs.

Dress in layers. It might snow, rain and shine in the same day. December is also known for strong winds, so dress up warm.

So when snow falls in New York?

January, February and March are typical snowy months in New York. There might be a mix of rain and snow in December but to get that all-white picture of iconic Central Park you would need to propose in later months.

If you want to incorporate winter feeling into your proposal, here are some tips. First, make it festive. If you propose in December, the city is decorated with Christmas ornaments and lights, its very celebratory, so do the same for your proposal. Either propose by the Christmas Tree with a secret photographer capturing a surprise ( the Lotte Palace tree or Washington Square park trees are absolutely stunning) or decorate a private space with the Christmas theme.

Another great option to get that winter feeling is to reserve a table in the restaurant with the fireplace. That is a perfect way to celebrate your  newly engagement and share great news with all your friends and family. If you propose in Central Park, the Tavern on the Green and Loeb Boathouse would be ideal spots.

Another way to add Christmas spirit to your proposal would be by renting a vintage car, which can pick you from or to the proposal. There is nothing like driving around a city enjoying all the Christmas decor.

What to make it festive but not into Christmas?

December is a perfect month for elegant  and elaborate proposals. If you want to propose, but not looking to do it under the Christmas Tree here are some tips:

1. Rent a private venue, preferably a rooftop with the city view.

With all the noise and crowds in the city you really need to find a private venue where  it will be just the two of you. A Private rooftop with indoor space would be perfect for an elegant proposal.

2. Choose an elegant decor

Instead of Christmas lights and bright decor, choose more neutral colors. Add candles and flowers, a live musician and photographer. Let it be a moment for just you two.

3. Invite family

To celebrate a newly engagement would be a perfect opportunity to get everyone together. Invite close friends and family and create memories together.

ROOFTOP MARRIAGE PROPOSAL IN NYC

The sun is out and the time has begun for rooftop cocktails, pool parties and rooftop restaurants. Proposing on a New York rooftop is something that neither you nor your partner will forget. To see the whole city skyline and share that moment with your partner is really precious and we know how to make it unforgettable for both of you.

Rooftop marriage proposals in New York don’t have to break the bank. There are many public rooftop options, from old favorites like the Empire State Building and Top of the Rock to the remarkable One World Observatory, the Edge or the Summit. All of them have exceptional views of the Manhattan skyline. The main “cons” of these locations are lack of privacy, long waiting lines and no options for customizations. But our skilled photographer would guarantee you the iconic skyline shot.

If you want somewhere away from the crowds and entry lines, we have a catalog of beautiful rooftop proposal ideas to make your proposal the perfect fit for you both. Our private rooftop proposals in New York City will take your partner’s breath away.

Unlike public venues where your plans are left somewhat to the hands of fate, when you book a private rooftop you have more freedom. We can decorate your rented rooftop and hire a musician to play your song of choice.

Proposing in public might be uncomfortable so we always prefer private setting for a special moment.  Just imagine the elegant setting with the personalized decor and only close people. What a perfect way to start a new chapter!  And our photo and video team will make sure that you remember this moment forever.

We work with NYC’s most exclusive rooftops and penthouses, each with panoramic views. Most of our rooftop options are in the Midtown area with views of the Empire State Building. We also work with Downtown area, Brooklyn, and even Long Island City, offering spectacular views of the city.

Things to keep in mind when proposing in public?

Allow professionals to take care
of your proposal in New York

In the age of social media and romantic comedies, public marriage proposals have become increasingly popular. From the grand gesture at a baseball game to the flash mob at the Times Square, public proposals offer a memorable way to pop the question. However, with the rise of these spectacles comes the need to understand the etiquette that underpins them.

If you’re considering taking your proposal to the public stage, here are some critical guidelines and tips to bear in mind.

Things to keep in mind when proposing in public - picture 2 | Proposal007

Proposing in public means that the location you choose will be open to the other people as well, who can take pictures and videos of you and your proposal. This might add an extra pressure on both of you or on the other hand make it easier.

So what is the Marriage Proposal Etiquette in Public Locations?

  1. Ensure Your Partner Would Appreciate a Public Proposal

While many cherish the thought of a public proposal, others may feel put on the spot or pressured. Know your partner’s preferences beforehand. It’s essential that the proposal is more about their comfort and happiness than it is about making a grand gesture.

  1. Seek Necessary Permissions

If you’re planning to propose in a specific public location like a restaurant, park, or monument, it’s essential to get the required permissions. Many places have rules or restrictions, and getting prior approval ensures you won’t run into any unforeseen interruptions. For example the popular proposal spot in Dumbo is required 21 day notice for the permit. Same applies to the charming gazebos in Central Park which requires the permit in order to secure the desired day and time.

  1. Consider The Audience

Remember that a public proposal will inevitably have an audience. Be considerate of those around you. Avoid proposing during crucial moments at events, such as during a concert’s climax or in the middle of a theatre performance or at someone else proposal. If you see proposal decorations at the location that you wanted to propose, consider moving to another place.

  1. Plan for Privacy, Even in a Public Setting

While the idea is to propose publicly, finding a spot that allows for a semblance of privacy within that space will enable a genuine, heartfelt exchange. A quiet corner in a park or a secluded spot by a water fountain can offer a good balance. Central Park has lots of secluded gazebos, so even  if you are at the park its still private and intimate proposal. Those location however require a permit, so plan accordingly.

  1. Have a Backup Plan

Outdoor proposals especially are subject to various unpredictable factors like weather or unexpected events. Always have an alternative idea or location in mind, just in case. Weather in New York is very unpredictable,  so if you proposing outdoors always think of the inside place ( hotel room or private venue).

  1. Document The Moment, But Be Discreet

It’s natural to want to capture this pivotal moment. If you’re planning to have a photographer or videographer, ensure they’re discreet and don’t intrude on the moment. Likewise, be respectful of others around you. Not everyone may want to be included in your personal memories.

  1. Respect Reactions

Should your partner be taken aback or need a moment, respect their feelings. Every individual reacts differently, and it’s crucial to be supportive and understanding regardless of the response. Especially if its a crowd of people around you, protect your partner and give them a minute to get together.

  1. Consider the environment

Public locations are not wedding/ engagement venues. You can not bring confetti, glitter, balloons, sparkles, alcohol  to it. Also clean up after the proposal to leave the place as you find it.

Public proposals can be magical and memorable. However, the key to a successful proposal lies in meticulous planning and a deep understanding of your partner’s preferences. Respect for others and the location is paramount. When done right, this grand gesture can be a story you both cherish for a lifetime.

Things to keep in mind when proposing in public - picture 3 | Proposal007

The best public proposal ideas in New York:

  • Top of the Empire State Building: Nothing quite matches the romance of the city lights from this iconic skyscraper. Evening or early morning can be particularly magical times.

  • Central Park:
    • Bow Bridge: This cast-iron bridge offers a romantic setting with the city skyline in the background.
    • Bethesda Terrace: With the Angel of Waters fountain and the Central Park Lake as a backdrop, this is a picturesque spot. This spot is perfect for our caricature artist marriage proposal.
    • Conservatory Garden: A secluded, beautifully landscaped part of Central Park, it’s an idyllic place for a private yet public proposal.

  • The High Line: This elevated linear park built on a historic freight rail line offers a unique setting amidst urban greenery.

  • Rooftop Bars: NYC is home to numerous rooftop bars with panoramic views. Some favorites include The Press Lounge, 230 Fifth, and Top of The Standard.

  • DUMBO: This Brooklyn neighborhood offers fantastic views of both the Manhattan and Brooklyn bridges. The cobblestone streets and waterfront add to its charm. ” Marry me” sign is perfect option for this location.

  • The Metropolitan Museum of Art: If your partner appreciates art, consider proposing in front of their favorite artwork.

  • Times Square: While it’s bustling, if you both enjoy the energy of the city, the heart of NYC can be the place. Maybe even arrange for your proposal to appear on one of the big screens!

  • Rockefeller Center:
    • Winter proposal by the famous Christmas tree or while ice-skating at the Rink in Rockefeller Center.
    • During other seasons, the Top of the Rock offers a less crowded alternative to the Empire State Building with equally compelling views.

  • New York Public Library: For literary lovers, the iconic Rose Main Reading Room or one of the library’s many beautiful corners can be enchanting.

  • On a Boat: Charter a private sailboat or join a nighttime cruise around Manhattan for a proposal with the NYC skyline and perhaps the Statue of Liberty as your backdrop.

  • The One World Observatory: Offering a bird’s-eye view of the city, this is a modern alternative to the more traditional skyscraper proposals.

Things to keep in mind when proposing in public - picture 4 | Proposal007

Remember, regardless of the location you choose, it’s essential to consider your partner’s personality and preferences. Some might love the grandeur of Times Square, while others might prefer the serenity of Central Park. Tailor the proposal to ensure it’s memorable and meaningful for both of you. And, if you’re planning an elaborate proposal or need a particular spot at an attraction, always check in advance for any required permissions or reservations.

This hotel is already so lovely that you don’t need to do much for a proposal. We suggest going with our simple “Room Makeover” package and adding some fresh roses to make it even more special. Bring in some photos of you two and play her favorite song to make it personal. The rooms are big, so a photographer can easily fit in to take pictures of the big moment. Plus, the hotel is right in the middle of Manhattan, so it’s a great spot for engagement photos afterward.

Proposing at the Lotte New York Palace is really special. It’s more than just asking a big question; it’s about making a beautiful moment that tells the story of your love, right in the heart of New York.

Things to consider

When planning a proposal at a hotel, it’s crucial to be aware of the hotel’s policies to ensure your special moment goes off without a hitch. Here are some key hotel policies you should consider:

  1. Decoration Restrictions:

Many hotels have specific guidelines about decorating rooms or using common areas for special events. Inquire about what’s allowed in terms of candles (real or LED), hanging decorations, and any other embellishments you’re considering.

  1. Photography and Videography Permissions:

Some hotels may require prior approval for professional photography or videography on the premises, especially in common areas like lobbies, gardens, or rooftops. Check if you need to inform the hotel or obtain permission beforehand.

  1. Noise and Privacy Considerations:

Be mindful of hotel policies regarding noise levels, especially if you’re planning something that could be disruptive to other guests, such as live music. Also, consider your own privacy and choose a location where you feel comfortable and uninterrupted.

  1. Guest Capacity in Rooms:

There may be limitations on the number of guests allowed in a hotel room at one time. This is relevant if you’re planning to have friends or family involved in the proposal or celebration afterward.

  1. Food and Beverage Policies:

If you plan to bring in outside food and drinks or want a special meal set up in your room, check the hotel’s policies. Some hotels may not allow outside catering, or there may be corkage fees for bringing your own champagne or wine.

  1. Cleanup and Damage Responsibilities:

Understand your responsibilities regarding cleanup and any potential damage caused by decorations or the event itself. Some hotels may charge additional fees for cleanup or if any damage occurs.

  1. Cancellations and Changes:

Be clear on the hotel’s cancellation or change policies, especially for bookings related to your proposal, such as room reservations, dining, or special arrangements.
